What to look for in a PE scheme of work

Each year at The PE Hub we speak with hundreds of teachers and senior leaders looking for a rigorous and progressive PE curriculum for their school.  A question often posed to us is what to look for in a Primary PE scheme of work.

Here's 5 things to look for

1) Engaging and inclusive content

The scheme should have a broad range of activities to suit your pupils.  Choose a scheme in which the activities and sports match with the facilities you have at your school.  The content should be up-to-date and relevant for modern teaching and learning standards.

2) Alignment with the National Curriculum

Check if the content matches the age-appropriate learning objectives and progression expectations.  Look for schemes that clearly map learning outcomes to curriculum standards and can demonstrate progress.

3) Assessment and Progress Tracking

The scheme should include formative and summative assessment tools to monitor student progress effectively.  Look for resources that support differentiated assessment, allowing teachers to measure growth across varying abilities.  Tools for children to self-assessment and peer assess can be useful.

4) Teacher support and teaching resources

The purpose of a good Primary PE scheme of work is to support teachers to deliver high quality PE lessons.  It is essential therefore that as well as the lessons themselves, teachers have access to supporting resources such as videos, pupil handouts and music for dance.

5) Safety

As most PE schemes of work now are online, it is extremely important to check the safety credentials of any scheme you wish to use.  Especially if you will be adding pupil information to the platform/software.
