Gymnastics Bunny Hops

Bunny hops teach children to weight bear on their hands, leading to more complex skills such as handstands and vaulting

Bunny Hops Teaching points

A bunny hop involves jumping with both feet together, with the hands momentarily supporting weight on the ground. It is a stepping stone to skill such as handstands and cartwheels.

  • Hands should be shoulder-width apart ready to take weight.
  • Fingers spread wide for stability.
  • Bend knees so you are close to the ground
  • Push off the floor with both feet, jumping forward while reaching hands toward the ground
  • As the hands touch the ground, shift weight onto them
  • Tuck the knees slightly and bring the feet together to land softly
  • As confidence grows, link hops together to travel forwards
