Bunny hops teach children to weight bear on their hands, leading to more complex skills such as handstands and vaulting
Bunny Hops Teaching points
A bunny hop involves jumping with both feet together, with the hands momentarily supporting weight on the ground. It is a stepping stone to skill such as handstands and cartwheels.
- Hands should be shoulder-width apart ready to take weight.
- Fingers spread wide for stability.
- Bend knees so you are close to the ground
- Push off the floor with both feet, jumping forward while reaching hands toward the ground
- As the hands touch the ground, shift weight onto them
- Tuck the knees slightly and bring the feet together to land softly
- As confidence grows, link hops together to travel forwards
