Football - Penalty shot

A penalty shot in football is a direct kick from 12 yards (modified distance in primary PE lessons), awarded for a foul in the penalty area. Only the goalkeeper can defend the shot; other players must stay outside the area until the kick is taken.

Teaching points for a penalty shot

  • Choose where you are going to aim to kick the ball and stick to it e.g. bottom left hand corner
  • Stay composed before and while taking the shot
  • Approach the ball from a slight angle
  • Plant your non kicking foot next to the ball and strike the ball with the inside of your foot
  • Focus on accuracy over power
  • Don't watch the goalkeeper but watch where you want to send the ball
