Tag rugby protocol refers to the steps that must be taken once an attacking player has had their tag removed by a defender. It is important for pupils to learn these steps as early as possible to aid game play and skill progression. It may take time to master but it is essential children understand and attempt to apply the principle in skill development and games. This resource helps the teacher with the three main stages of the tag protocol.

After a player has been tagged (Tag removed).

Once the ball carrier has been tagged, they must:

  • Pass the ball within 3 seconds or after 3 steps
  • Retrieve their tag from the defender and reattach before resuming play
Tag protocol 3 steps

The tagged player must immediately stop running and hold the ball. They are allowed up to three steps after being tagged to stop completely if they are in motion

 Passing once tagged
