A backhand in tennis is a stroke where the player hits the ball on their non-dominant side. It is important for maintaining control and returning the ball effectively when a forehand isn’t possible, allowing players to stay in the rally.

Tennis Backhand Teaching Points

  • Try to stay on your toes so you can move around ready to play the shot
  • Step with the same foot as your racquet hand towards the flight of the ball
  • Turn your body sideways so your racquet shoulder points toward the net
  • Swing the racquet from low to high to make contact with the ball
  • Allow the racquet to swing and follow through
