One Minute Rally Challenge

If space and time allow, repeat the one-minute rally challenge from previous weeks in the same pairs where possible. Can the couples improve on last week’s score? What is their best score overall?

Starter Activity

Quick Feet – Split the class into two groups and set up two games. One big game is not suitable for younger children. Set up a 10 x 10 box with ten players inside and one player on the outside with a bucket of softballs and five players wearing coloured bibs, their job is to collect stray balls and return them to the bucket.

The thrower must throw the ball and hit a player below the knees. When a player is hit they must come out of the box and join the thrower. The last player left in the box is the winner. Swap roles three times so there is a fair split between being a ball collector and being in the box. The players should get used to moving their feet quickly to move around the court to return.

Activity 1

Children begin by standing in a line, aiming to pass the shuttle down the line without using their hands. If they drop the shuttlecock, they can pick it up and carry on. When the shuttle reaches the last child in the line, they should run to the front and start the process again. One point is scored each time the child at the back of the line goes to the front. Extension: Complete the same activity but on the backhand.

Activity 2

Player A will start with the shuttle and hit to player B who catches the shuttle and hits to player C and so on.  When it gets to D (or E if you have an extra player), they hit back to A. 1 point is scored each time the shuttle gets back to player A.

Extension: Try a continuous rally, so no catching, just hitting A – B, B – C and so on).

Activity 3

Player A feeds shuttles to player B.  B aims to hit shuttles into the target, and the same for players C and D. After six shots swap roles and continue to swap roles every six shots. If you have an extra player, C can continue to feed six shuttles before switching.

Activity 4

  • Place all shuttlecocks in a hoop in the middle of each group’s area with cones around the outside (you will need the same amount of shuttles and cones as people in the groups).
  • The first player runs to the shuttles, takes one and places it in a hoop on the outside, then returns to the group. The next player goes.
  • Once all shuttles are in the outer hoops and you are back to the first player, they repeat but move a shuttle from outside back to the middle and so on.
  • 1 point is scored each time a full cycle is complete e.g. each time the shuttles are all moved to the outside hoops or each time they are returned to the middle.

to work collaboratively to score points in different scenarios.

Preparation

Have paper, clipboard and pencil for each team, or a whiteboard and pen. If time allows, set up the stations in the hall before the lesson. Show the children how to complete each station. Show the children how to keep a tally of their teams score.

Bisi Skills Competition

  • Split the class into four or eight teams depending on class size. Eight teams will require each station to be set up twice.  Allow for 5 minutes at each station (extend the time as pupils’ fitness and lesson time allow).
  • After the 5 minutes, rotate teams to the next station.  It should be possible for children to complete each station twice. One child must keep score for their team; this person changes each activity.

Instructions

Explain to pupils that their objective is to get as many points on each station as possible and should help each other to do so. Listening to the teacher is essential, so they know when to start and stop and when to rotate to the next station. If you are unsure or need help with keeping the tally, first ask your teammates for help before asking the teacher, can you solve the problem yourselves?
