Tag Rugby Activity Guide
Activity Overview

Tag Rugby in Key Stage 2 Primary PE introduces pupils to the core principles of running with the ball, passing backwards, evading defenders and working as a team in a safe, non-contact format. Early lessons focus on simple movement skills such as dodging, changing direction, maintaining possession and making accurate short passes while supporting teammates. As pupils progress, they begin to apply key skills in small-sided games, such as learning when to pass, how to create space, how to defend effectively using tagging technique, and how to work together to move the ball up the pitch. Common KS2 activities include passing grids, evasion challenges, tag-retrieval races and 4v4 or 5v5 mini-games that keep decisions manageable and inclusive.

Tag Rugby FAQs
Is Tag Rugby part of the primary PE national curriculum?
Whilst Tag Rugby isn't named as an example, the KS2 PE curriculum requires pupils to take part in competitive games and apply attacking and defending principles. Teaching the Tag Rugby activity is one of the most common ways schools meet these outcomes. It allows pupils to learn evasion, teamwork, passing and simple tactical decision-making in a safe, non-contact environment.
What skills should KS2 pupils learn in Tag Rugby?
Key skills include running with the ball, dodging defenders, passing backwards with control, staying behind the ball carrier and using tags effectively when defending. As pupils progress, they begin to combine skills such as supporting play, creating space, choosing when to pass, and understanding simple attacking shapes.
Is Tag Rugby safe for primary-aged pupils?
Yes. Unlike full rugby union or league gameplay Tag Rugby is non-contact, meaning tackling is replaced with removing a tag from the belt of the ball carrier. This keeps lessons active and competitive while greatly reducing the risk of injury, and makes the sport accessible to pupils who may be nervous about physical contact.
What equipment do I need to teach Tag Rugby in Key Stage 2?
A basic Tag Rugby setup includes tag belts, rugby balls (usually size 3 or 4), cones or markers for pitch areas, and bibs for teams. Most drills and small-sided games can be delivered on a playground or field, and schools with limited space can adapt activities to smaller areas without losing the core skills.
