Upper body muscles are essential for everyday activities like lifting, throwing, climbing, and even carrying a rucksack. By learning about these muscles, children can:

  • Develop better body awareness.
  • Understand how their body works in different sports and physical activities.
  • Gain an understanding of their own physical strengths and areas that require development.

Here are some main upper body muscles and their roles:

  • Biceps - Found at the front of the upper arm, these muscles are responsible for bending the elbow and are used in activities like lifting and pulling.
  • Triceps - Located at the back of the upper arm, they help straighten the elbow, essential for pushing and throwing.
  • Latissimus Dorsi (Lats) - These large back muscles assist in pulling and twisting movements, such as climbing or rowing.
  • Serratus Anterior - These are found near the ribs and helps move the shoulder blade, aiding in pushing and punching, great for boxercise!
  • Pectorals (Pecs) - These chest muscles are key for pushing movements and are engaged during actions like throwing a ball or pushing a door.
