Year 4 Gymnastics Unit 1
Become increasingly competent and confident to perform skills more consistently. Perform in time with a partner and group. Use compositional ideas in sequences.
Knowledge Organiser
Prior Learning
Identified similarities and differences in sequences. Developed body management over a range of floor exercises. Attempted to bring explosive movements into floor work.
Unit Focus
Become increasingly competent and confident to perform skills more consistently. Perform in time with a partner and group. Use compositional ideas in sequences.
We are learning...
- to rock in a pike shape and use changes of speed and direction
- how the STEP principle can be used to adapt and improve a sequence
- to develop a controlled transfer of weight from feet to hands through cartwheel progressions
- to explore and apply different relationships within a group gymnastics sequence
- to develop knees to tabletop mount and apply pathways and relationships in a group apparatus sequence
- to judge a performance and use feedback to improve.
Key Questions
- What is a compositional idea?
- How did your pathways help your group move together or apart?
- Which cartwheel progression did you choose, and why was it suitable for you?
Equipment
Mats, hoops, cones, throw down spots, wall bars, bean bags, small balls, low apparatus/benches, skipping ropes, ropes, action cards.
Vocabulary
Control, group, similar, different, direction, speed, partner, actions, compositional, stamina, leap, refine, progression.
Concepts
Judging systems in gymnastics help decide how well a sequence has been performed. Judges look for creativity, meaning how interesting and imaginative the routine is. They also look at technique, such as pointed toes, straight shapes and controlled balances These judging criteria help pupils understand what makes a strong performance.
Assessment Overview
Head – Decide on ways to improve a piece of work using compositional elements and implement changes.
Hand – Demonstrate some control when taking weight on hands.
Heart – Adapt actions and sequences to work with partners and small groups.

Lesson Overview
Year 4 Gymnastics Unit 1 Lesson 6
- Enhance their existing sequence and perform it to be judged
- Use a judging system to evaluate a group sequence
- Use feedback to make improvements to their performance
We are learning: to judge a performance and use feedback to improve
Activity: Judge and improve
Year 4 Gymnastics Unit 1 Lesson 1
- Show tension and extension in pike rock
- Use compositional ideas, including changes in speed & direction
- Compose and perform a sequence of 6 elements
We are learning: to rock in a pike shape and use changes of speed and direction in a sequence
Activity: Pike rock and Assessment for learning
Year 4 Gymnastics Unit 1 Lesson 2
- Create a sequence with a partner to be performed in unison
- Pairs collaborate to combine their sequences into one
- Use the STEP principle to enhance the creative process
We are learning: to use the STEP principle to create and perform a partner sequence.
Activity: Sequence building using the STEP principle.
Year 4 Gymnastics Unit 1 Lesson 3
- Recap how to support body weight safely through the hands.
- Develop the hand and foot placement needed for a cartwheel.
- Apply a suitable cartwheel progression within a short sequence.
We are learning: to develop a controlled transfer of weight from feet to hands through cartwheel progressions
Activity: Variations of taking weight on hands
Year 4 Gymnastics Unit 1 Lesson 4
- Recap how pathways can be used to move through the performance space.
- Explore matching, mirroring, moving together, moving apart and contact.
- Select and apply different relationships within a group sequence.
We are learning: to explore and apply different relationships within a group gymnastics sequence.
Activity: Exploring relationships, creating a group sequence
Year 4 Gymnastics Unit 1 Lesson 5
- Recap and develop the knees-to-tabletop mount at an appropriate height.
- Adapt pathways and relationships when working with apparatus.
- Refine and perform a controlled group sequence.
We are learning: to develop a knees-to-tabletop mount and apply pathways and relationships in a group apparatus sequence.
Activity: Recap knees to tabletop, relationships and apparatus work
