Sustain pace over short and longer distances. Run as part of a relay team. Perform a range of jumps and throws.

Knowledge Organiser

Prior Learning

Investigated ways of performing running, jumping and throwing activities. Used a variety of equipment to measure, time and compare different styles of runs, jumps and throws.

Unit Focus

Sustain pace over short and longer distances. Run as part of a relay team. Perform a range of jumps and throws.

We are learning...

  • to run for speed & distance on our own and as part of a team.
  • pacing our run over longer distances.
  • different jumping styles and exploring which ones we can jump further with
  • to use the push-throw technique.
  • to exchange a baton within a restricted area.
  • to design a running, jumping or throwing activity for others using the STEP principle.

Key Questions

  • Why should you pass the baton into your partner’s opposite hand?
  • Which throw do you think is most effective for distance?
  • Can you jump further with a run up?

Equipment

A variety of balls, hoops, bean bags, quoits, throw down markers, foam javelins, balloons, stopwatch, measuring tape, skipping ropes, foam discus, vortex howler, low hurdles.

Vocabulary

Bounce, relay, baton, safety, rules, targets, record, set, take over, pass, sustain, push, receive, hop – step – jump.

Rules

  • Receiving the baton within a restricted area.
  • Fair scoring of event/activity.
  • Appropriate rules in running, jumping or throwing events.

Assessment Overview

Head – Distinguish between good and poor performances and suggest ways to improve self and others.

Hand – Sustain pace over shorter and longer distances.

Lesson Overview

Year 5 Athletics Lesson 6

  • Work in small groups to design a running, jumping or throwing event.
  • Choose suitable distance, equipment, time and space.
  • Teach the event to another group.

We are learning: to design a running, jumping or throwing activity for others using the STEP principle Activity: Event planning

Year 5 Athletics Lesson 1

  • Work as part of a relay team to run for speed and distance.
  • Develop stamina by running for as long as possible individually.
  • Use positive and supportive language to encourage teammates.

We are learning: to run for speed and distance on our own and as part of a team Activity: Assessment for Learning Activity

Year 5 Athletics Lesson 2

  • Measure how far you can run in a set time.
  • Understand why pacing is important for longer runs.
  • Try to improve the distance covered in timed runs.

We are learning: pacing to run over longer distances Activity: Recording distances run in set times

Year 5 Athletics Lesson 3

  • Find the most effective jumping style for distance.
  • Combine jumps (e.g. hop, step, jump).
  • Use a run-up to jump further.

We are learning: different jumping styles and exploring which ones we can jump further with Activity: Steeplechase and jump for distance activity.

Year 5 Athletics Lesson 4

  • Develop push throw technique using different equipment.
  • Practise one- and two-handed push throws.
  • Aim for accuracy when throwing at targets.

We are learning: to use the push throw technique Activity: Push throwing in pairs, throwing golf

Year 5 Athletics Lesson 5

  • Perform baton exchange as part of a relay team
  • Anticipate when to start moving on the exchange
  • Perform baton exchange in a given area

We are learning: to exchange a baton within a restricted area Activity: Beep test baton relay
