A set shot in basketball is a stationary shot taken without jumping, typically with both feet planted on the ground. It is often used during free throws or when a player has enough time and space to shoot without pressure from defenders. See how to teach a set shot in our video below.
Basketball set shot teaching points
- Feet balanced and positioned beneath hips, with knees slightly bent
- To shoot, the dominant hand should be underneath the ball with the supporting hand to the side
- Shoulders square onto the net with eyes focused on the net
- Push up through feet and straighten legs to create power for the shot
- Hands guide the ball and follow the shot up and forward
- The ball should flick off the fingers to create more power
